Depending on where you live and how you take care of your treasured pieces will play an enormous part as to how long the item will remain bright gold color. If you live in areas with high air polution the polutants will start to react with the underlying Sterling faster than if you lived in the country side where the air is cleaner. Other factors are how clean you keep the jewelry, your personal chemistry, where and how you store your jewelry.

Never dip your Vermeil jewelry in jewelry cleaning liquids or use harsh polishing cloths. At first simply wash it in mild soap and water and dry it with a soft cloth. An old towel, dry, will give it sparkle. After a while, the Gold will start to wear off the high surfaces on the piece. Don’t worry, that is what it is supposed to do. By cleaning the higher surfaces with a soft cloth you will have a bas relief effect that I personally love. The high areas will turn bright silver, the recessed spots will be Gold. A truly unique effect.

Gold Vermeil has been used for many years. I have seen Antique jewelry pieces from the earlier half of last century that still hold their bas relief effect. When all else fails and you want a solid Gold look again, simply have the piece replated. It is as easy as that and I can probably do it for you for a nominal fee.
